Tobias Rehberger x artek: nothing happens for a reason

‘nothing happens for a reason’ at logomo café in turku, finland is a collaboration between finnish design furniture manufacturer artek and german artist tobias rehberger.

This is not the first collaboration between rehberger and artek. on the occasion of the 2009 venice art biennale, they created a permanent installation in the cafeteria of the palazzo delle exposizioni della biennale, formerly the italian pavilion, for which rehberger was awarded the golden lion.

The installation at turku follows the same vain as that of the space in venice. It is a white interior adorned with bold black graphic lines running throughout, overlapping and intertwining with one another. These lines carry over the artek furniture within the café connecting the space and objects which inhabit it together. Void of any color but a single orange lamp and single orange line cutting through the interior,

‘nothing happens for a reason’ is on show at the logomo café until december 18th, 2011.

I like the idea of creating a visual art project which is about ‘not seeing something’. the painting method of battle ships in the first and second world war, the so called dazzle painting, in a way for me perfectly represents this paradox. The sculpture I created for turku is based on the same concept as the one in venice. it applies a completely different pattern to the space, but despite its very different look, it should have the same dazzling effect.’ – tobias rehberger
